Golden Valley has 34 designated parks, fields, and nature areas within its borders, as well as nearly 50 miles of trails. The Parks and Recreation department provides sports leagues and other programming for residents of all ages, as well as adaptive programs for those with developmental disabilities. Schools

The residents of Golden Valley are served by two school districts. The Robbinsdale District, known for it’s extensive IB program, as well as the first middle school authorized for an IB program in the state, serves the northern section of Golden Valley. Hopkins Public Schools serves the southern section of the city, and is known for its Chinese & Spanish Immersion programs throughout the district. Golden Valley is also home to Breck School, and the Perpich Center for Arts Education.

Metro Transit provides Golden Valley with public transportation services. These include express bus routes to Minneapolis, as well as Metro Mobility service. Metro Mobility provides dial-a-ride transportation services to those who are unable to use the regular bus system due to disability or illness.

Golden Valley is a Statutory Plan B city, meaning that it operates with a part time Mayor and City Council to legislate city wide policy. There’s a full time city manager that serves as the chief executive, who is appointed by the city council. The city manager appoints the city attorney as well as the city’s department heads. City Council is appointed for staggered four year terms, with the Mayor elected for a four year term.

City History

The village of Golden Valley, incorporated in 1886, began as a primarily agricultural community with farms and mills run by the few hundred residents inhabiting the area. The village began to see more residential development with the addition of the Electric Luce Line Railroad in 1912. World War II brought major industry to Golden Valley, which was followed by more substantial residential growth. In 1972 the village became a full-blown city, and has continued to grow into the community it is today.
